Counting The Beat Silver Scrolls Special

The APRA Silver Scrolls are New Zealand's annual songwriting awards. APRA is an organisation of songwriters and each year it's members nominate and vote on the songs that they believe to be the best songs of the year. The ceremony itself is an annual highlight. Each of the nominated songs is performed by another musical act, leading to some unique and surprising interpretations.
This year the five finalists were:

  • Anika Moa - Running Through The Fire (Storm)
  • Julia Deans - New Dialogue
  • The Mint Chicks - Say Goodbye
  • Artisan Guns - Autumn
  • The Naked and Famous - Young Blood

Counting The Beat was at the awards ceremony to talk to the finalists and, being a bit of a fan of a good cover version, to check out the performances.

Levitating Cats on Waiheke Radio

Local band Levitating Cats will play live on Waiheke Radio on Wednesday 7 July. Levitating Cats all instrumental set is based around guitarist and songwriter Paul Haines' rock riffs backed by accomplished rhythm section Greg Minter and Manuel Kahura. Tune in for the live set at around 8.30pm Wed July 7

Congratulations to Waiheke Radio's very own Chris Walker for recently turning out Counting the Beat episode #100!!! Since the end of The Beach in 2008 Chris has been podcasting NZ music rarities, obscurities and new releases on the internet and on Waiheke Radio. The Counting the Beat podcast represents New Zealand on the Music Alliance Pact project and has been mentioned recently in The Guardian newspaper as well as being nationally recognized as one of the preeminent NZ music blogs and podcasts.
