Compiled by Soundway’s Miles Cleret, Afro Tropical Soundz Vol. 1 features eleven of his favourite tracks, all taken from various albums he’s compiled, co-compiled and released since the label began in 2002. A must for fans and new comers alike, it’s a superb overview of the label that has been dedicated to re-releasing lost and forgotten recordings from the world’s most vibrant musical cultures for nearly ten years now. Set for release in conjunction with Record Store Day, Afro Tropical Soundz Volume 1 is available on CD only.
Since 1934, Disco Fuentes (Fuentes Records) has acted as the largest record label in Colombia, a country where it is impossible to escape music. This collection of tracks delves into the golden years of 1960-76 and is hand picked from the enormous Fuentes record catalogue comprising various tropical music styles. Cumbia, Gaita, Fandango, Salsa and Champeta all feature in the selection from one of the worlds best Latin music archives.

Produced by Bosco Mann and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records’ House of Soul studios, this record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon’s raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her firmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. From the lushPhilly-Soul fanfare that ushers in “The Game Gets Old” at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style“Mama Don’t Like My Man” at the tail, the Dap-Kings dance seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline.
