On the 1st of November a new form of Auckland city comes into existence. Before then you'll have the chance to vote for a mayor, a councillor and a new community board. There are 18 candidates standing for 5 positions on the Waiheke Community Board.

In this first of two opportunities to hear from the candidates Waiheke radio has given each of them two minutes to answer the question, "Why should Waiheke people vote for you?"

After you've listened to the statements we encourage you to make comment and ask questions. Later in the election process we will ask each candidate back  on-air for an interview which will include your questions. We look forward to your input.

UPDATE: We have now conducted an interview with this candidate incorporating some of the community feedback and questions. Take a listen

who did what?

Which candidates made submissions on the Auckland Governance Bill and Royal Commission?

Question

Denise, what's your positioin on Waiheke becoming a Biosphere reserve?

BR

"Waiheke Biosphere Reserve. Meeting 27th June.

...The meeting discussed strategies for the forthcoming Local Board election. The feeling of the meeting was that it was probably not a good idea for any candidate to stand on the Biosphere proposal alone. Cr. Denise Roche said, “What we want is a Local Board containing five members who support the Biosphere Reserve, not just one”. Several people who have indicated they intend to stand for the Board addressed the meeting...

A committee of eight was appointed to take the organisation forward....

The committee consists of Andrew Watkins, Colin Beardon, Dee Austring, Denise Roche, Dorte Wray, Emma Bowyer-Warner, Huhana Davis and Millie Watkins"

same 3 questions for all candidates

 Hi Denise

I'm interested in knowing more about the candidates 'collective' view on some of the 'things' that help people work effectively together, so have posted the same 3 questions to all candidates

cheers - dougal

1. What do you see as being the 3-4 key ‘things/areas’ the new board should focus on or understand within the first 90 days of being elected?

2. What do you believe are the 3-5 key capabilities/skills the new board need to have/develop in order to work effectively

3. What would be your answer to the question “WHY does the community board exist?” (WHY it’s meant to be doing whatever it does)

Who did what

Hi Visitor,

I think that's probably as question best posed to all candidates so they can each answer it themselves.  But from searching the Royal Commission on Auckland Governance website and also the government's websites around the bills and subsequent acts that were introduced to create the Auckland Governance structure I can only find submissions from six candidates including myself. These are Dorte Wray, Millie Watkins, Colin Beardon, Jim Hannan and Andy Spence.

Hello Visitor and Denise,

I am another local board candidate who made a submission to the Royal Commission. I agree its a good question to ask all the candidates.

Submissions o Royal Commision on Auckland Governance

Hiya Marijke -I just checked again. Nothing there from you.  Something from Tom though.  You can check at the url below.

http://www.royalcommission.govt.nz/RCCMS.nsf/submissions_a_z?openview&restricttocategory=R&count=-1

Nothing at the government select commitees websites either.

I do remember that you did a bloody brilliant verbal and written submission on the annual plan to the council about spatial and future planning though.

Naku noa,

Denise

Forum created for discussing this issue

Because there has been interest in asking all candidates what role they played in Royal Commission and Auckland Local Government select committee processes we have started a discussion forum. Candidates may wish to post details of their participation and perhaps links to their submissions.

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Question

Hi Jafa,
There are no magic bullets which will solve all our problems and we need to see the proposal as one of a raft of initiatives to improve our ability to sustainably manage our community and its precious environment. Consequently I support the proposal that Waiheke become a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and I’d like to see this proposal endorsed by the new Auckland Council as soon as practicable.

What I like most about the biosphere concept is that it builds on a lot of the work that has already been done and adds an additional layer of research and education into how our island develops in the future.

Kind regards.
Denise

Biosphere Reserve

Isn't there a risk that the Reserve will increase the cost of housing (and therefore living) on Waiheke by making development more difficult (and therefore more expensive)?
