THE NORTHERN SOUL SATURDAY SPECIAL

This Saturday 27th local DJ GLENN SOLO brings you a night of NORTHERN SOUL on The Saturday Special.Northern soul is a music and dance movement that emerged from the British mod scene, initially in northern England in the late 1960s. Northern soul mainly consists of a particular style of black American Soul music based on the heavy beat and fast tempo of the mid-1960s Tamla Motown sound. The Northern soul movement, however, generally eschews Motown or Motown-influenced music that has met with significant mainstream success. The recordings most prized by genre enthusiasts are usually by lesser-known artists, and were initially released only in limited numbers, often by small regional labels in the United States.

Tune in Saturday night to hear Glenn Solo play some casino classic, rareities and obscurities, you may even hear a few tracks that are reassuringly familiar - one thing's for certain, this music will have you dancing around your living room.

THE RETURN OF THE SATURDAY MORNING BREAKFAST SHOW

This Saturday 23rd sees the welcome return of Simon and El to The Saturday Morning Breakfast Show. Following a bout of feverish activity in which the boys got together to create lots of exciting new features for the show, they eventually decided that if it ain't broke - don't fix it. So expect a lot more of the same sort of music and chat that allowed them to coast through most of the last year without so much as breaking sweat. "It's a fun-filled rollercoaster of a ride" through your Saturday Mornings whilst daring to take an unashamed look at their weird lives...their wild loves...in a jazz-haunted, desire-tormented world. (It also includes the fishing report).

THE SATURDAY SPECIAL - THE BILL HICKS STORY

Posted 01/11/2009 - 17:04 by El

Bill Hicks

was the legendary outlaw comic who criss-crossed America preaching the truth. He was savage, brilliant, funny, tremendously intelligent, brave, hilarious and right about nearly everything. Join me, EL, this Saturday November 7th, as I bring you the Bill Hicks Story, playing his exhilerating, renegade routines taken from 7 of his classic CDs, including ARIZONA BAY and RANT IN E-MINOR. Bill Hicks was a comic genius whose work deserves to be heard by a larger audience - 14 years after his untimely death his material is more relevant than ever. Be warned, however, his approach was often belligerant and vulgar and it is not for the easily offended or for young ears. As Bill Hicks himself warns - "this show contains everything your parents hate, everything the church preaches against, everything the government fears. Enjoy".

The Bill Hicks story will play out Nov. 7th on The Saturday Special at the later time of 9 o'clock. If you've not heard Bill Hicks before, prepare for a revelation, and if you have, then you've got over two hours of Bill Hicks at his very best to look forward to.

THE SATURDAY SPECIAL - RE-DIRECTED MALE: ONE FANS TRIP WITH JULIAN COPE Pt. 2

Posted 09/09/2009 - 20:46 by El

Since the demise of The Teardrop Explodes in the early 80's Julian Cope has been a reluctant pop star, acid casualty, eco-warrior, pagan revivalist, village idiot, holy fool, shaman, poet, author, revolutionary and scholar - he's also released no less than 44 albums, most of which you've never heard of, I expect. Join me this Saturday 12th as I continue the trip with Julian Cope and explore the music from his later albums - from the pagan pop of  INTERPRETER  to the celebratory THE UNRULY IMAGINATION released earlier this year. As Hunter S. Thompson said: "The only ones who know where the edge is, are the one's who've gone over it". The only way in which a people can know what they think in terms of the world outside, is for their poets and artists to travel outside their culture and report back. Join me for the view from the other side, with added tunes, for Re-Directed Male: One FansTrip With Julian Cope Part 2, this Saturday evening, on The Saturday Special.

Join me this Saturday 12th as I take a trip with Julian Cope and explore the music from these albums - from giddy psychedelic pop to mind enhancing psyched-up krautrock wig-outs (although actually, I'll be favouring the giddy pop side of things for the most part). There's so much to choose from I'm spreading out the show over two weeks to do justice to the man they call The Arch-Drude Of Wessex (or M'lud Yatesbury, depending upon what mood he's in). He is definitely someone you'd want to check out, so join me for Re-Directed Male: One FansTrip With Julian Cope Part 2 this Saturday evening for The Saturday Special.
